Jet Stream Sound set the standard as the Hutton and Wallis kennels dominated the first round of the Coral Champion Stakes at Romford. Hutton – winner of the event in 2013 – sent out the night’s two fastest ‘Jet Stream’ winners in Jet Stream Sound, 11 spots outside the track record in 34.78, and Jet Stream Jack (34.93).
Sound was Airport-Captain-like after bursting to the front on the run to the bend. Domino Storm had a tougher task to get space on the rail and was already beaten coming out of the second bend. Sound clocked 13.33, just five spots outside the 225m track record, and extended that lead before slightly tying up late on. He still won by nearly seven lengths
Kennelmate Jack also dominated from the front before holding off Teejayspowerhawk by three quarters of a length.
Mark Wallis had six entries in the event and came away with three wins and two seconds. (Ironically, the only eliminated runner was Swift Whirlwind, who the trainer had previously thought looked decent value in the betting. He was well placed until the fifth bend but faded when unable to hit the front and finished down the field behind Jaytee Berlin)
Despite Sound’s brilliance, the ‘run of the night’ award would probably have been shared with Adageo Bob . The veteran didn’t trap well and looked in danger of elimination early on. But the John Marriott bred black showed incredible middle pace to go through his field and win in 35.26
Blonde Razor endured a great buckle with Droopys Jarrow in heat 6. Jarrow led, Razor powered through on the rail, and eventually held on by just over a length in 35.09.
Patchys Kerry gave a clue as to her long-term future when coming past Franks Dream and Jaytee Osprey to win heat four in 35.07. Although unsuccessful over Monmore’s 630 metres, the black looked an outstanding stayer in the making when pulling away from the fifth bend to win win by five and a half lengths.
