Yesterday I posted a Tweet that appears to have caused huge offense to a small minority of people in the industry. It was a link to the Kelly Windebank’s brilliant re-homing film.
The Tweet read: This is the sort of thing the GBGB should have been doing from day 1. So bloody obvious!!!!! There is a huge public misconception that needs addressing PLEASE share folks.
I stand by the sentiments, but would like to clarify one point: ‘Day 1’. I felt I was clearly referring to January 2 2009, when GBGB came into existance, and quite frankly I stand by those sentiments. I criticised the GBGB of that era then, and I defy anyone with an ounce of integrity to justify them. I won’t reel off the cock-ups, resignations, pay-offs and general mismanagement of our industry.
But equally as big a crime was the absolute zero effort to tackle the industry image. The world hates us but we only have ourselves to blame. We lay in our trenches as the antis launch volley after volley of lies and never hit back.
I have seen many welfare videos from around the world in my time but quite frankly, From The Track To The Sofa is in a different league. It is superb. In four hours, the story was read over 3,000 times and shared God knows how many times.
I can’t say GBGB have had 11 wasted years, but there is no doubt that that there has been more achieved in the last three than the previous eight: not least being the Greyhound Commitment and the various aspects that form it.
I hope that clears that up. Because if anyone felt the need to make life difficult for the Star, I hope we can be absolutely transparent about what those reasons might be and not a clear misunderstanding.
