We have previously featured the great work of ‘Your Greyhound’s History’ a Facebook page set up to help the owners of retired greyhounds find a bit more about their family pets.
Of course sometimes the new owners get a bit more than they bargained for when it transpires that the new couch potato was just a cut above average during their racing days.
That is certain what happened when Julie Wrightson enquired about the family background and history of ‘Dec’.
The black will be known to many on this site for his open race exploits which included finishing runner-up to Roxholme Hat in the 2017 Scurry Final and he won a string of open races at Newcastle, Sunderland and Doncaster for Savva Roberts.
The response was both swift and impressive as Julie’s follow up post (left) went to show.
Stringer Bell, who competed against Decco was a popular and prolific open racer for Carol Grasso for more than three years before retiring in August.
His new owner Joanna Steane got in touch with the site to say: “Hi all, Minty (Stringer Bell) has been with me for just over 3 weeks now and has settled in fabulously. I know a little about his history thanks to information from his racing owners and Googles searches.
“Just wondering if there is any additional information that can be found and whether there are any of his litter mates on here (there are bound to be lots of half siblings as he is yet another with Ballymac Vic as a sire).”
Molly Wilson replied with the following. . and also supplied some presentation photos. The site’s admin Elaine Moore came up with pedigrees and various videos showing Stringer Bell in action.
Finally, many Romford regulars will also be familiar with Nans Turbo who was a prolific winner for Ernie Gaskin some eight or nine years ago.
(Nev celebrated his eleventh birthday back in May).
His ‘forever home’ owner Alan Healey posted on the Facebook page: “Big package arrived this morning. Many thanks to Christine Clarke for sending us one of Neville’s trophies. The ‘Best Prices at Coral Trophy 2012’ which he won at Romford under his racing name Nans Turbo.
“We will find it pride of place in the house to celebrate what an excellent dog our Nev is. As usual he has taken it in his stride despite his dislocated toe.”
The Your Greyhound’s History site now has 6,500 members and continues to build relationships between the racing and non-racing owners of these amazing dogs.
Please continue to spread the word.
