Suffolk Downs will stage their first open races – 14 months after the re-opening of the former ‘Mildenhall Stadium’ – on Thursday.

As with their counterparts at Swindon, who also race during the afternoon, there is a scarcity of ‘outside’ runners.

Racing Manager Robbie Steward said: “Di Jinks is the only outside trainer but we have filled four opens including our first 716m race. I realise that it is tough to get here early morning so I have put the opens on as the last four races on the card. That will mean it will be an 11am kenneling for those in the later races.

“I am particularly pleased that we have been able to duplicate the 548m maidens. They will give us extra options on the graded side. We staged five stayers races last week with an absolutely cracking S3.

“We will be keeping the opens going every Thursday through until May when we will also stage our first competition. It is sponsored by our local layers Bet Goodwin and will be an 18 runner 548m competition with £1,000 to the winner.

“Overall we are doing pretty well for runners. In fact I would say we probably have the strongest kennel strength of the four (Henlow Racing) tracks.
