In recent weeks we have mentioned the additional buzz winning big competitions with pups you have brought into the world. Although Bresbet Steel City Cup winner Forest Gold doesn’t quite tick that box for Kevin Hutton, his association with the kennel goes back even further!
Drawn two in Saturday night’s final, the race unfolded like this:
The winning trainer was the first to admit that he called the wrong result in running.
He said: “Once Ace led I thought he had won it. The pace he showed off the second bend was outstanding, I have never seen him backrun before, but credit to Gold who put in a tremendous run to catch him.”
Gold is a son of Dorotas Wildcat and was conceived in Oxfordshire shortly after his sire had gone to stud.
Kevin said: “Forest Dot was one of his first matings. Paddy (Kehoe – breeder) sent her over and she was mated here. Fifteen months or so later, Paddy phoned and said ‘I think there might be a special one‘, and that was how we came to get him.”
Forest Gold was bought by Mark Hart and Darren Loveys and Kevin pays tribute to their patience as their purchase gradually grew into the role.
He said: “They were very patient. Gold always showed he had ability, but he was young and got himself a bit worked up in traveling and kenneling. He just needed a bit of time and he is now a model pro probably running the best races of his career.”
The winner and third are being lined up for the Eclipse at Nottingham with Headford Flash due a short break.
Kevin said: “I will get Ace checked over but he seems okay this morning. Flash needs a break. He has had quite a bit of racing following an injury and will benefit from a bit of time on his bed.
“I was delighted for Wildcat. Michael (Dunphy – stud keeper) phoned to congratulate us this morning. These big wins are gold dust for young stud dogs. Thankfully, Wildcat is doing pretty well. Breeders love early pace and he is throwing plenty of it.”
The aforementioned Dorotas Wildcat had a very good night when daughter Tashade collected the Brinkleys Poet At Stud Young Guns Final for Paul Sallis.
Beaten in her first three A4 races at Monmore, she has been a revelation since, winning her last five in a row.
The Bresbet British Bred Maiden Final went to Kim Gooding’s puppy Rookys Girl who reeled in the early paced Acomb Hugo.
Although she missed out in all three finals, Angela Harrison still sent out a four-timer with the highlight being the fastest 480 run of the year for Droopys Dazzler (27.48) while Hardy Rebel’s 28.65 run was quicker than the Steel City Cup Final.
