As previously reported, when the blundering Social Democrats launched their bid to see greyhound racing defunded in Ireland, they faced widespread humiliation that the ‘abandoned greyhound’ in their promotional blurb was in fact, a lurcher: #lurchergate – writes editor Floyd Amphlett
However, there was an additional ‘action’ shot that immediately had greyhound lovers scratching their heads.
At visibly less than half the size of a racing greyhound, the sleuths decided to unearth the identity of said abused and abandoned longtail.
It transpires, that said mutt is a whippet. Better still, he is Danish whippet called Windy Meadow Bowie and the photo was taken no closer to Shelbourne Park than the Kallerupbanen track, west of Copenhagen.
You will be pleased to know that Bowie is now ten years old and living out a well earned retirement (see pic).
When approached about the Social Democrats’ campaign, his bemused owned could only describe it as “a bit funny that they have used a picture of a show whippet, on a track in Denmark.”
The bigger concern now will be for other traditional Irish sporting activities likely to be targeted by the Social Democrats.
We understand that the annual penguin shoot held in Limerick in December is now likely to be cancelled, along with next year’s Kangaroo Wrestling World Championships from Abbeyfeale.
