To describe the first round of the ARC Laurels as ‘eventful’ would be a gross understatement, and no more so than in the opening heat.

Following a fabulous display of early pace, the race looked at the mercy of Bambis Magic who first eased along the backstraight and then coming into the last bend, had a pop at his great rival Ivanexile (they finished 1-2 in the Birmingham Cup). Matt Dartnall’s runner then dead-heated for third place, but qualified for the semi with the drawing of lots.

Quickest winner on the night was track record holder Coolavanny Shado who made up for a disappointing run on his last visit to the track in a Judgement Night supporting open.
