Roswell Romanov added his name to a list of Mark Wallis trained Romford 575m specialists when he landed the £5,000 Coral Coronation Cup on Wednesday evening.
Beaten only four times – all seconds – in his previous 16 attempts over course and distance, and including the runner-up spot in the Essex Vase, the 4-5f appeared to have a potentially disastrous draw in four, on the outside of Memphis Mafia. Connections were probably hoping that the white jacketed Mafia would miss his break.
Not a bit of it. Kevin Hutton’s dog trapped in front leaving the favourite with a potentially tricky passage on his outside. But with all the class track craft associated with the likes of Eye Onthe Veto, Reel Trickyone, and Adageo Bob, Roswell Romanov surged clear and came home a couple clear of Mafia in a very respectable 35.10.
