There was a time when early pace could win a Dundalk International. But the switch to the new circuit in 2003 and from 525yds to 550yds has produced a different type of champion, as epitomised by dual winner Definate Opinion whose also landed the 600yd Cesarewitch twice in the same period.
Early pace can still prevail, as demonstrated by the lines of Skywalker Queen and Metor Jack, but this year’s race features another sextet with who will be more comfortable in the last 50 yards, than the first 50.
Given the lay-out of the race, the vote goes to Pat Buckley’s Droopys Roddick. The powerful brindle is not a regular first bend leader but given tonight’s opposition, and one of his better breaks, he could make all.
