It’s Friday and that can only mean one thing; open racing at Romford. As ever the Essex venue host fourteen open races live on Racing Post TV from 6.27pm. Due to a few maiden races, there are many greyhounds making their race debuts tonight and yours truly has found out more about some of them.
Monmore trainer Kevin Hutton knows what it takes to win at Romford and tonight brings a team of six to tackle the track. Three of the six are making their race debuts on these shores and it is those that I have endeavoured to find out more about.
First up is Burgess Sarah in a maidens affair at 7.03pm over 400 metres. The July ’17 whelp although making her debut over here she has had four runs in Ireland at Newbridge over 480 metres. The daughter of Casheen Legend and Paradise Siesta reached the final of the unraced stakes at Newbridge finishing second. She has had two three dog trials over C&D improving thirteen spots in her second one. She will be expected to improve further and should not be a maiden for very long.
Kevin said: “She did brilliant in the in-raced stakes at Newbridge. She reached the final but it didn’t happen for her on the night.
“We have not done much with all three. She looks a real nice sort. She will get the trip and will hopefully improve with each run.
“She has trap five tonight and what we have seen in trials she runs middle, middle to rails. She does keep a nice straight path to the bend from the traps.”
Coral and Ladbrokes are currently 13/8 for Burgess Sarah to win on her Romford debut.
Ballymac Camdon makes his race debut in the first heat of the Romford Friday night 500 maidens at 7.17pm over 400 metres. Unlike his kennel mate the August ’17 whelp has not raced in Ireland and runs for the very first time tonight. The son of Ballymac Matt and Coyote Queen has also had two trials over C&D and improved dramatically with the look around. He knocked off thirty five spots from his first spin around to clock a calculated time of 24.28. He will be expected to continue to improve tonight and like his litter sister will should not be a maiden for long.
Kevin said: “He looks a real nice pup. It is a big ask to win an open on his race debut. I’m looking forward to it. Romford and 400 metres is a nice place to start. He looks more like a 480 metres type. He will mature into that type of dog in time.”
Coral and Ladrokes are top price 5/2 for Ballymac Camdon to win on his race debut.
In the third heat of the Romford Friday night 500 maidens at 7.49pm, Burgess Lucia makes her Romford debut for team Hutton. The July ’17 whelp is the litter sister of Burgess Sarah and reached the same final of the Newbridge unraced stakes finishing last. The daughter of CashenLegend and Paradise Siesta has had two trials over C&D and like his two kennel mates improved on his second look around. She however improved the most knocking off sixty one spots from her first trial clicking a best of the three times of 24.20.
Kevin said: “She is similar to her sister [Burgess Sarah]. She also reached the final of the un-raced stakes at Newbridge. She looks a lovely bitch. She looks a lovely Romford sort. She has early pace and is consistent from the boxes. Trap six is perfect for her.”
On all three and which one he thinks could go best tonight Kevin said: “Burgess Lucia. She is a lovely little bitch and looks the more natural Romford dog of the three. She could do really well at the track. Camdon could go well. He could either win first time up or need the race.
“I’m really looking forward to tonight. They are greyhounds to look forward to.”
7/4 is generally available for Burgess Lucia to make a winning start to her career in these shores.
