The dust is beginning to settle after Roswell Romanov’s victory in the Coronation Cup on Wednesday. It’s back to normal tonight with twelve open races on show from fourteen. Starting at 5.59pm, the first four races are available via Coral and Ladbrokes shops only with the rest all on Racing Post TV.
Unattached, Hartlepool based trainer Peter Wood is making the long journey down south for a smash and grab treble with his three greyhounds. His first greyhound runs at 6.16pm with the other two in the next two races. He could have three winners and be on his way before the first race airs on Racing Post TV. As usual I have found out more.
For those who follow the open race sprint scene up north will definitely know the name Daytime Flyer. The May’13 whelp has only had 31 races in an injury plagued career but has still managed 17 wins. In 2015 the son of Ocean Crash and Ballaghboy Cool won the William Hill Festival flyer at Sunderland beating the prolific sprinter Walshes Hill then the Northern sprint at Sheffield. He is unbeaten at Sunderland from nine races including four on the bounce last August and July.
Trainer Peter Wood on his sprint star said: “At home we have nicknamed him sick note. He has had a broken hock, a dew claw removed but bounces back every time.
“He came out of his trial really well at Pelaw Grange and we thought we would nurse him back in a nice little sprint race at Romford. The tight bends at Romford should suit him down to the ground. We have given him a nice break and have been very patient with him and hope to keep him sound.
“He is an out and out sprinter and would run through brick walls for you.
In the puppies open at 6.36pm, trainer Peter Wood has entered Poolie Roy. The son of Superior Product and Lughill Sonya has had seven races all at open race level winning one at Sunderland over 450 metres. The March ’15 whelp looks well drawn in the red jacket and looks to have plenty of early pace.
Trainer Peter Wood on his puppy said: “He is a big 85 pounder [38kg] and moves around a track really well. His balance is unreal and I have no worries about him taking to Romford. The 400 metres distance could be perfect for him. I think he will get 480 metres when he is older. He does trap better from trap three but runs a nice straight course to the bend.
“He picked up a bit of kennel sickness and lost a bit of weight but is fit again.”
In the next at 6.55pm, trainer Peter Wood would like to be on a three timer with his Poolie Jack. The litter brother of Poolie Roy has less races than Roy with just one race at Sunderland over 450 metres where he managed third.
Peter Wood on him said: “He is the litter brother of Roy and they are like clones of each other. He has showed good potential in trials but needs to do it against five other dogs.
“He had kennel sickness, we worked on his fitness, then he got a cough. They both have early and Jack has a leaders chance tonight but is a bit novicey coming from behind.
“There will be no problem with the track and being in trap one could be to our advantage.”
