Ballydoyle Honey (Brett Lee-Kildallon Maid, Jul 13) confirmed her status as the fastest greyhound in training with a 29.34 victory (550) at Shelbourne in the second round of the Easter Cup at Shelbourne Park.
As noted in his column on this site, Graham Holland was expecting a much improved display from his Oaks winner following last week’s defeat and so it proved.
Faster away than usual, she squeezed clear of Jaytee Valencia and then outclassed the field for an eight length victory. Valencia was outrun for second place by Leave At Dawn.
The kennel had a 1-2 in the final qualifier which went to Sidarian Vega (Westmead Hawk-Manic Fantasy, Aug 13). The 5-4jf was last away and took a gap at the first bend to find himself in second pace behind Only For Life. Vega took the lead along the backstraight and looked all over the winner. But Skywalker Rory, who found the worst of the trouble ran on to get within a length of the 29.69 winner.
Jaytee Jet (Droopys Scolari-Chin Gach Gook, Sep 13) a former 29.30 winner over course and distance, was second quickest on the night. The Paul Hennessy trained black was led up by Peregrine Falcon in the four-runner contest but led at the third bend and won by four and a half from Notorious Ben in 29.44.
Orange jacketed Gold Cup winner Slippery Fred (Brett Lee-Steamy Windows, May 12) kept up his hopes of a big race double with a trap to live five length win over Lenson Sanchez in 29.56.
