1953 Former White City trainer Tom Chadwick has died aged 75. Prior to taking out his licence, Chadwick was a solicitor.

1953 Welsh breeder George Wright has concerns about the last litter ever sired by the brilliant Mad Tanist. Wright complains that so many of his pups have been infected by distemper. He says: “Nearly every greyhound I have reared before has had distemper and although I have never lost a dog through the disease, I am not convinced that the dogs have been as good as they should”

2012 Leading Irish trainer Matt Travers has died following a lengthy illness. A winner of the Irish Derby with Penny County, his other stars included Jelly Crock, Princes Pal and Pulse Rate.

1987 Kent gets a new track with the opening of Canterbury. Situated on the Kingsmead Sports Centre site, greyhounds will join the speedway operation which is run by Wally Mawdsley and Bill Lees. Former trainer Frank Baldwin, quits his job as assistant at doomed Harringay to become racing manager assisted by David Day. Racing over a standard distance of 450 metres, local trainers will include Dave Ingram-Seal, George Ripley and Bill Cecil. The first meeting attracts a crowd of 1,500.

1971 White City introduce a new event, the Westway Cup. Staged over 725 yards and worth £500 to the winner, the event is restricted to dogs who have never raced beyond 550 yards.

1987 Two greyhounds had to be put to sleep after being involved in an accident near Newton Abbott. The dogs were in a broken down vehicle belonging to owner trainer Edgar Courtney when another vehicle ploughed into the back of it.

2012 After escaping the red pen by not fighting until after the winning line in the finals of the East Anglian and Scottish Derbys, Taylors Cruise, finally errs during a race. He is disqualified and retired in the semi finals of the Monmore Gold Cup.

1970 Silver Plassey makes 360gns at Shelbourne Sales. Within three months he has run third in the Leinster Champion Puppy Stake and won the Dummore Puppy Cup. He eventually goes to stud

1999 Romford boss Bill Hiscock hits out at BGRB Chief Exec Geoffrey Thomas and the GRA for “Hijacking the racing calendar.” His outburst follows the decision of GRA to bring the 2000 Greyhound Derby forward by a month to avoid the Euro 2000 Finals.
