1996 Favourite Shanless Slippy becomes the first British bred winner of the Produce Stakes at Clonmel. Bred by John O’Brien in Surrey, the son of Murlens Slippy was reared and trained by Dolores Ruth. Within days, another British bred, Batties Rocket, wins the Waterford Masters. 1957 The Cork 525 yard track record is broken twice in a night. Socks On reduced it to 1964 before a 19 month old puppy, reduced it to 29.45. Soon sold and established as the best pup racing in Britain, he is Kilcaskin Kern.

2003 Trainer Jane Houfton was left fuming after the second round of the Steel City Cup. Her runner Starofthebill dead-heated for third place with Lawrence Tuffin’s Wise Diamond. After conferring with the local stewards, Mrs Houfton agreed to a run-off to decide the qualifying place. Tuffin declined to run his dog again and forfeited his place. Mrs Houfton duly phoned the dog’s owner to tell him that Starofthebill would be in the semi finals. However, the NGRC head office intervened and quoted rule 90 which stated that there must be three days between rounds before a run-off can take place. Trainers Houfton and Tuffin were then invited to toss a coin to determine qualification and Mrs Houfton lost.

1991 Romford are fined £500 despite averting the embarrassment of track record breaker Travara Rock running in place of A8 grader Wheres The Teddy. The dog passed through two inspections before being detected by a paddock steward. The track were fined for announcing that the dog had been withdrawn by the vet. Trainer Paddy Coughlan, handler of both dogs was fined £300.

1980 Desert Pilot and Kilmagoura Mist are honoured with the 1979 Dog and Bitch of the Year awards at the Hilton Hotel in London. Pilot’s (and Derby winner Sarahs Bunny’s) handler Geoff De Mulder collects his second consecutive Trainer of the Year award.

2014 Peter Laurie (then the CEO of RGT, now CEO of Battersea), lands the Racing Post Derby Tipsters Challenge. He finished the contest some £25.64 in profit to a £1 stake, significantly helped by selecting 16-1 Derby winner Salad Dodger.

1971 Breachs Buzzard (Maryville Hi- Breachs Blizzard), bred by Judy Pattinson from Rutland, proves himself the top stayer in training when breaking the Walthamstow 700 yard track record before landing the Grand Prix Final.

2003 Romford abandon a meeting two races from the end following the death of local owner Robert Fowler.

1947 After being defrauded each Saturday by around £1,000 (index linked to roughly £45,000) by forged tote tickets Wimbledon introduce new, specially perforated tickets, that are specific to each race.

1986 In the space of 48 hours littermates Wildcat Joe (Blue Riband) and Sneaky Liberty (TV Trophy) each run second in their respective finals.

1991 Ger McKenna gets a two year ban from the NCC following the positive tests from his Waterloo Cup runners Go Speedy Go and Island Oak.

1957 Trainer Jimmy Jowett is so impressed with the early pace shown by Irish Cup runner Glittering Coin that he buys the dog to race him on the track in England. The fawn duly wins the Silver Salver.

2009 The first round of the Peterborough Puppy Derby goes in favour of the layers with only one winning favourite. The other seven heats saw winners returned at 7-2, 9-2, 5-1, 7-1, 14-1, 16-1, 16-1.

2014 English Derby ante post favourite Kereight King crashes out in the first round but worse is to follow for trainer Pat Curtin when it is revealed that the dog tested positive for a metabolite of the anabolic steroid Stanozolol in a pre-competition trial.

2012 Hove favourite backers have a nightmare meeting when all 12 are beaten.

1969 Sheffield bookie Arnie Dennis is attempting to break new ground by betting in decimals, rather than fractions.

1987 The NGRC agree to suspend their latest edict – that greyhounds arriving from Ireland must be immediately inoculated – following talks with their Irish counterparts. The Club are concerned over the number of greyhounds being presented with false vaccination certificates.

2013 Former Hall Green trainer Barbara Smith dies aged 83. He best known runner was the multi open race winner Star Of Tyrone.

1957 A competition in Greyhound Express to nominate the greatest hurdler of all time comes down heavily in favour of Barrowside. The 1955 Grand National went on to lead in the Greyhound Derby final but broke a toe and finished second to Rushton Mac.

1996 Wimbledon trainer Dave Kinchett (57) retires. Formerly at Hull, Shawfield and White City, his best greyhounds included Torbal Black, Main Avenue, Softly, Main Avenue & St. Leger winner Cute Caddie
