All safely on farm.” Among the 87lb dogs is a brindle who will one day become the most successful British export ever to the USA, the future Hall Of Famer, Julius Caesar. Jean is of course David and John Mullins’ aunt.

1963 Bookmakers snub the first paying afternoon greyhound scheme floated by the National Greyhound Racing Society. The plan, which would guarantee service from afternoon greyhound meetings (at a cost of £25 per shop for the entire winter) should National Hunt racing be cancelled. Only around 25% of shops responded of which the majority were against the scheme. The scheme is gradually accepted and expanded. Yes – track owners created BAGS!

1993 An American greyhound kennel owner receives an eight month prison sentence for maltreatment of more than 100 greyhounds.

1996 Phil Bergin’s Pas Miller accidentally raced instead of lower grade kennelmate Slush N Go and won a Harlow A8 race by seven lengths in 26.27. A row then breaks out with the NGRC after the incorrect form for the two dogs appears on future racecards. However the track are in the spotlight again within a week when sending out the incorrect result in an open race.

1990 Worth Doing (Brother Fox-Versatile Miss) is crowned 1989 Australian Greyhound of the Year despite only racing five times in the year. He won the lot which included the National Derby and Richmond Cup.

1964 Biddy Mulligan sets a record price for a bitch at Shelbourne sales when sold for 1,000gns.

1997 Roger Cearns reports that he has 23 trainer applications as he looks to re-open Sittingbourne which went into administration under a different management some eight months earlier.

1987 The four Davis brothers, owners at Ipswich, are to appeal against a Council decision to refuse planning permission on the site. Meanwhile the NGRC have issued an improvement notice on the site.

1987 Crayford are fined £1,500 by the NGRC ‘for acting in a manner prejudicial to the good name of greyhound racing.’ With horse racing cancelled for a meeting in January, the track switched it evening meeting to a BAGS fixture with less than 24 hours notice. They also failed to produced various lines of information of the racecard relating to the rules of racing.

2002 Injuries to Top Savings and Rutland Budgie, first and third in the English Derby betting, sees El Ronan heading the market at 12-1.

1993 Faced with the imminent opening of Stainforth, Hull lose five trainers to the Yorkshire venue: Dave Barton, Tommy Earls, Johnny Seagrave, John King and Kay Thompson. BS spokesman Dennis Pope reveals that the Craven Road track has only 80 available dogs for two meetings per week. The track offer a loyalty bonus which pays the difference between the prize money and kennel bill of every dog.

1964 GRA consider changing the name of their North London stadium Harringay to tie with the recently created GLC’s new London borough of Haringey. There are 19 greyhound tracks within the GLC jurisdiction.

2008 Walthamstow present mementos to trainers Gary Baggs and Peter Rich who have recently retired from training.

1969 Waterford trainer Nicky Kervick travels to Boston in New England with 30 young greyhounds, brought for around £12,000, which he hopes to sell into the American market.

1995 Cradley Heath racing manager Paul Griffiths withdraws a dog from a race at the track’s final meeting before closure having been warned by the off-course betting industry that it had been heavily gambled. He justifies himself: It was our final greyhound meeting and I didn’t want it turning into a farce.”

2011 Newbridge greyhound track closes due to declining attendances. A statement suggests it could re-open under new management in the future.

1998 Shawfield boss and BGRB director Billy King launches a scathing attack on BGRB Chief Executive Geoffrey Thomas following the launch of a GRA/promoter led Blue Print plan. Deemed by the press to be a ‘breakaway’ formula for the top tracks, King demands to know why the subject was not raised by Thomas, who King alleges was complicit in the scheme, at the recent BGRB board meeting.

1951 Shawfield 500 yard track record holder Olivers Lad is sold at Aldridge Sales for 740 guineas

1993 Sullane Castle (Tapwatcher-Airhill Foam) goes unbeaten through the £5,000 Pall Mall at Oxford. The Nigel Saunders trained brindle clocks 27.13 for the four 450 metres and wins the final by four lengths, from Bitter Bank, for an aggregate winning margin through the four run competition of 21 lengths.

1997 Glown Fox sets a new Hall Green 474m hurdles track record of 29.21. However, his time, recorded behind the new Bramich hare is still some eight lengths off the 28.52 recorded by Kildare Slippy behind the McKee-Scott lure.

2013 Four littermates Crimbos Rocky, Russsanda Rox, Russanda Rob and Candlelight King contest a D2 event at Sheffield and occupy the first four within a length of each other.
