Remembering Joyce Lloyd

On the 8th February the heats for the Joyce Lloyd Memorial  Trophy take place at Monmore Green. This is the 5th renewal of the competition and this year will be a 18 dog event for top graders at the Track  with a total of £650 added prize money for the final +trophy &
presentation jacket to the winner.
There will also be a S1 630 one off race with 200.added prize money in memory of Dave Gregory who was connected with the Paul Sallis kennel who passed away very suddenly last November who is sadly missed by the kennel and all the owners. It was a real shock to all his friends and work colleagues
As usual family & friends will travel from Merseyside to celebrate Joyce’s memory. All the staff at Monmore and racing office play there part in making it a night to remember and is a fitting tribute to my late wife.
She used to love a night at the dogs to see our dogs run. I currently interests in eight dogs at the track .and have had over 120 winners so far over 4 years  so have been very lucky. The highlight so far was being third in the 2018 Gold Cup at Monmore 2.5 lengths behind King Turbo with Plan Ahead, trained by Team Sallis which was a great thrill. Joyce would have been so pleased.

Memories of two great litter brothers

It was 40 years ago this year that a dog I bred Dodford Bill, was so unluckily eliminated at the semi final stage of both the English and Irish Derby’s.

Some of you will remember that along with his litter brother Dodford Ben, sons of Instant Gambler out of my bitch Ballyegan Maid, a track record holder at Watford in only her 4th race under rules and badly injured thereafter in a 6 bend open at Harringay, was bought and trained by Dave Drinkwater.

Many people thought he was the best dog in both competitions that year. He was going to be trained for the  St. Leger but like so many other good greyhounds got a career ending injury before he could be tried over 6 bends.

Tempted to return

Well done. I read your pages all the time. Someone has to speak out. From the Track to the Sofa’? Brilliant! It really did make me think should I buy a greyhound. I have been out the game a long time but it is tempting to get back in.

Looking at your Remember When, I notice there is no mention of Wincot Clifford, bred and owned by Mr and Mrs Harold Lakin. He won the 1959 Greyhound St. Leger. It was to my mind a great achievement. I think he was trained by Jack Toesland at Perry Barr. He also won the British Produce Stakes.

Thank you for the kind sentiments Keith. They are obviously much more expensive than the critical ones which are far easier to find in this industry. Will check the archives to see if we have a photo of Wincot Clifford. – Ed
