Northern Puppy Derby finalist La Cuchilla made a successful return to racing in a 480 metre contest at Monmore last night.

Steve Race’s son of Tyrur Big Mike, who was fifth to Kneejerkreaction in that Newcastle decider, was soon clear in the Ladbrokes.com Stakes and went on to beat Corley Ace by two and a half lengths in 28.19sec, the fastest time of the night.

Race had a double with his Ballymac Bobbyjo, who was a finalist in last year’s Ladbrokes Puppy Derby at the track.

The son of Ballymac Maeve, also making his 2015 debut, was soon well clear and although tiring close home he held local runner Whittle Eagle by a short head in 28.29sec.

Jenny Walters’ Bjerregaard Boy made a useful staying debut in the Ladbrokes.com 630 when leading from trap to line to repel Tambourine Man by a length and a half in 38.05sec.
