So often in the shadow of his former kennelmate Gougane Jet, Quarteira took over the Scurry Gold Cup title with another impressive win on Saturday night.

Trainer Mark Wallis always reckoned the black would need age and experience before he would be at his peak and at two years and seven months, he is surely approaching it. Not that there have been many setbacks on the way. The Perry Barr outing was his 18th since joining the kennel. His record is ten wins and seven seconds.

Perhaps the most exciting race on the supporting card went to Chris Fereday’s Tommys Dove who looked poor value at 20-1 after his first circuit, but then produced a lung busting run to catch odds-on shot  Aayamza Dancer.

A very wet track prevented Savana Heross from breaking the all-important 43.00 barrier for the 710 – though he did so on calculated times. There was also a six bend double for Nathan Hunt, which became a treble thanks to Antigua Eclipse.

It was also a great night for British breeding. In addition to the Oaks winner, there was a double for the Yorkies, Acomb Johnny/Irene while Signet Goofy looks as good as ever for John Mullins.

The brindle won for the 38th time in 73 races (52%) and clocked a calculated sub28.00 in the process – just 24 hours after sisters Westwell Emer and Moments Of Magic picked up a double for Kevin Hutton at Oxford. The litter will be four in January.
