All three of our entries for the Champion Stakes ran at Romford’s first meeting over the new course last Friday but I was happy with all of them.
I have been a regular at Romford for many years and I don’t see that the switch will make any significant difference. It’s true that Desperado Dan missed his break, I don’t know whether that was due to the different start, but I was pleased with the run anyway.
He is coming back from a minor hock problem and ran his heart out to catch Sporting Dave, only to be done on the line by Mark’s bitch, Aayamza Express. I think Dan needed the run and should come on for it in the first round.
I have also entered Seaglass Celine, who also finished second on Friday, and Distant Lucy. She is from the next litter out of the dam of Kilmore Lemon and I think she has a big career in front, though possibly over further.
There are just over four months left until the end of the year and I am hoping that there is at least one more Cat One win for us out there.
We have two so far this year – Bockos Doomie/Henlow Puppy Derby, Seaglass Tiger/Ladbrokes Gold Cup – and four Cat Twos, plus the RPGTV Juvenile.
We are only a small kennel, myself Ria and Cheryl with space for a maximum of 27 dogs, when full. I counted up today and we only have 15 dogs available for racing.
We have moved on Magical Houdini who has joined Belinda Green, Bockos Rory is being tried over hurdles and Droopys Biker has returned to Ireland.
Apart from Kilmore Lemon who is now available at stud, the rest of the spaces are taken by the top open racers who contest the Cat One events, a few ‘battlers’ and pups.
Among the battlers, I would include dogs like Goldies Ginola and Goldies Hoddle. They are not top class by any stretch, but their strike rates are right up there. You need dogs like that in every kennel.
We have quite a lot of 2018 whelps, most of which are barely old enough to race. I particularly like Goldies Symnsy (Jan ’18) who has already done 29.30 at Central Park. We also have a new pup who has just come back from Nick Savva’s after being schooled, from the next litter out of Ballymac Razl, by Definite Opinion. Nick thinks may have some ability.
In terms of the bigger names, I am hoping to send Seaglass Tiger, Seaglass Phantom and Lenson Whelan for the Yarmouth Derby with Bockos Doomie going for the Kent Derby. If any of the Yarmouth runners get knocked out early, they could be switched to Central Park. That was how Bockos Alfie ended up winning the Kent Derby.
I thought Goldies Hotspur ran a cracker at Monmore on Saturday over a distance that is too short for her and she will be going to Romford for the TV Trophy. I might also be tempted to run her and Affleck Bolt in the Kent St.Leger.
