Soviet Paddy (Droopys Vieri-Soviet Cheyenne, Jan 13) added a second title to his Yarmouth CV when landing the £1,200 Fosters East Anglian Challenge.

The John Mullins trained black, who won the £1,000 Yarmouth Championship for local graded runners back in February, is acknowledged more for his consistency than his pure pace. (He has only broken 28.00 on two occasions, including his fastest ever run in the semis – 27.83)

But that reliability was demonstrated once again when he trapped in front and led up from Shaneboy Francie. Paddy missed the early crowding that engulfed the rest of the field. Although the other locally trained runner, Do It For Twiggy, ran on gamely for second, the leader still had three length to spare when crossing the winning line in 28.04.

Paddy is the joint most prolific winner at the track this year with ten victories; an achievement shared with Nicola Carr’s Artistic Moment.

While the Mullins kennel took the main event, trainer Jim Daly enjoyed a hugely successful evening with a 127-1 open race four-timer: Droopys Scion (28.27-462m), Droopys Rum (41.38-659m), Kelva Destiny (28.13-462m) and Droopys Alberta (28.21-462m).
