Recent Towcester D1 winner Stefans Jet and Henlow A3 runner Adeles Johnjoe recorded the joint fastest time at Oxford’s first trial session, 27.97 for the 450 metres.

Fifteen three-runner trials took place on a new slightly larger circuit with the going assessed as being between -20 and -40.

Senior racing manager James Chalkley said: “There were no reports of any injuries which is the main thing. The generally accepted view was how well the dogs ran the track first time. We have another session for a similar number of dogs tomorrow.

“We have received a significant number of calls from owners wanting to race dogs here but not knowing who to put them with. With that in mind we will be announcing the names of our attached trainers next week.”

Among those with realistic expectations of a contract is Coventry based Lee Field, trainer of Adeles Johnjoe.

He said: “They flooded the track early on which is better safe than sorry, and it speeded up a bit as they put the tractor around. I have a lot of dogs that will suit the track with the long run to the bend but also being a shorter distance than Towcester. I always think that there is a track for every dog and I can really see Johnjoe loving it there.”

The former Monmore handler currently has 25 on the Henlow strength and a smaller number at Towcester.

He said: “I hope to get around 20-25 at Oxford but I won’t give up the other two. I want to support Kevin and there is a real buzz about joining a new track like Oxford. I had never been to the place before in my life and it’s different level to be honest. The thought of Friday and Saturday night opens is just something to get excited about.”
