“Well she certainly made us sweat, but she always gives her all” said understated trainer Heather Dimmock after a sensational last gasp win by Donation in the £10,000 Lowther Stakes at Nottingham on Monday night.

But when you have 19 wins and 6 seconds from 32 races but have missed out in three Category One finals, no one can reasonably suggest that the 7-4f was not fully deserving of her victory at her fourth attempt.

Although she would clearly have been better suited to a 500m Lowther Stakes, the switch to Nottingham, even over the shorter trip, suited the bitch who is kenneled almost on Towcester’s doorstep.

Heather said: “First of all, I’d like to thank Mark Lowther for putting the race on. Although she seems to run most tracks, Donation didn’t really take to Towcester.

“After she faded in the last few metres at Sunderland (over 640m) we will be keeping her to tracks that she likes, and over the longer four bend distances.

“The immediate plan is the Steel City Cup at Sheffield.”
