If you had needed some help in looking for some help in picking the winner of the 2023 Premier Greyhound Racing St.Leger – could you have been given a bigger clue?
Just three nights after landing the Click Competitions East Anglian Derby with Watch The Limo, Seamus Cahill sent out Droopys Clue for the final of ‘the stayers classic’ and this is what he did.
Having cleared the 275m split in 15.99 (TR 15.80), the Aug ’21 son of Out Of Range ASB and Droopys Natalia took 26 spots off of Space Jet’s two year old track 710m record.
Small wonder that trainer Seamus Cahill described the dogs as “without doubt the best stayer I have ever trained. To be honest, I don’t normally go for the longer distance dogs, and the previous best one I had was a ‘Droopys’, but I’ve had nothing of Clue’s class before.”
To date the 35 kilo coloured dog only has 20 races on his card but has won two Cat Ones (Juvenile Classic), finished second in the Stayers Classic and also reached the Seasons Scaffolding Final at Hove.
Seamus said: “I was told about the dog by Wayne Murphy in Cork. We bought him off an unofficial trial and he wasn’t awful expensive; the sort of money you would expect to pay for a reasonable open racer. Alex Hambi was looking out for a nice dog and when your luck is in . . . .I am delighted for Alex, he is good owner and a lucky one. We have previously won a Puppy Derby with Make Noise.
“I haven’t made too many plans for Clue. He’ll have a couple of weeks on the easy list but we won’t be laying him off completely. There is a possibility of that six bend competition at Oxford (Bet365 Challenge Cup) later in the year but we’ve plenty of time to make a decision about that.”
There is also some good news about Clue’s kennelmate Maree Champion. The pair arrived on the open race scene at virtually the same time and their early careers were similarly promising.
However, the son of Droopys Sydney lost some form shortly after beating New Destiny in a match race at Towcester.
Seamus said: “We had his bloods checked and they weren’t right but we also had him checked over and found a niggle which has been treated. We think we’ve got to the bottom of it and he will hopefully be trialling back in the next 10 days.”
