A press release from Stadia UK implies that greyhound racing on a newly built stadium should be underway by next July despite a recent delay in the start of the construction of the new facility writes Floyd Amphlett.
The company have been under pressure from the Swindon Robins Speedway supporters to confirm that the new venue, to be built alongside the existing stadium, will be ready for the start of the 2016 speedway season in April.
However Clarke Osborne, Chairman of holding company TokLon stated: “We are disappointed that a few issues have resulted in delay to our original timetable, as we have always been working to a target of having the new facility complete in time for the Swindon Robins Speedway team’s opening meeting in April next year. However this project is complex and there have been multiple factors to be considered, particularly the need to build the new facility in close proximity to the existing whilst it is fully operational, to ensure a smooth changeover.”
However, George Edwards, Property Director at Stadia UK said “We will be submitting the reserved matters application this month and we hope to be ready for the first customers sometime in July 2016. We have received great support from Swindon Council and our team have worked very hard to ensure that the changeover from the existing to the new facility is smooth and easy for our customers. There will be disruption during the process but our aim is to keep this to a minimum.”
Stadia UK’s Director of Stadia Bill Glass added: ” It is particularly pleasing for everyone involved in Swindon Greyhounds that the track can be built alongside the existing operation to ensure continuity of greyhound racing.
“It has been a long wait, but our regulars will start to see changes around the stadium from the middle of January.”
