The Retired Greyhound Trust has announced the appointment of Professor Steven Dean MRCVS as Chairman of the Board of Trustees in succession to Dr Andrew Higgins, who is stepping down after seven years in the post.
Professor Dean brings over 40 years’ experience within the animal welfare sector and was Chief Executive of the UK government’s Veterinary Medicines Directorate from 2002 until 2011. From 2011 until 2015 he was Chairman of the Kennel Club; he is a highly successful breeder of pedigree Border Terriers and has recently acquired his first working Labrador. Professor Dean will take up his appointment following the October meeting of the RGT Board and his appointment will be for three years in the first instance.
Commenting on the appointment, the outgoing Chairman, Dr Higgins, said: “RGT is very fortunate to have someone of Steve Dean’s experience joining the Board with his knowledge of the dog world, political skills and commitment to animal welfare. It is a challenging time for RGT and I am confident that the charity will grow from strength to strength under his leadership.”
Professor Dean said: “I worked for a period of time as a track veterinary surgeon which enhanced my enthusiasm for the racing greyhound. I very much look forward to being a Champion for this magnificent breed and, in particular, devoting time to improving upon the past success of the RGT in promoting the retired greyhound as a suitable companion.”
