If Shawfield held a Greyhound of the year title, Nadurra Alvaro’s (Ace Hi Rumble-Westmead Joy, Jul 10) name would already be on it.
John McLachlan’s blue dog only went to traps on 34 occasions but won exactly half of those outings with seven second places.
The former Newcastle A1 runner has picked up most of his wins from the back of the handicap but has also won level breaks and finished the year with a five-timer.
Cash For Kids finished the year in second place with 14 wins.
Racing manager Daniel Rankin said: “He would have done even better but for injuries, I think he was off something like 18 weekends.
“But that is how John trains his dogs. They are very fit but if there is a slightest doubt an injury, he lays them off.
“That is probably the reason why so many off his dogs continue to run well even as they get older; Nadurra Alvaro is over four years old now.
“Alvara is also a very good tracker who runs close to the rails and waits for the space to open up in front of him before he goes through the gap. He stays on well and that is why he has won so many.”
*Any punter who had bet £10 every time Alvaro had been to traps would have finished the year with a profit of £250.
