With three Kings and a Queen, Liz McNair always had a strong hand in the BGBF British Bred Sprint Final at Towcester and so it proved when Silver Salver runner-up King Drake led home littermates King Bruno and Queen Lilly in the £3,000 decider.
In a messy race that saw King Sam and Saffron Xpress knocked over, assistant trainer Rab McNair had no idea that Drake had prevailed by a length in 16.24 with Lilly three quarters of a length further back.
He said: “I was concentrating on catching King Sam and when I got to the pick-up somebody said ‘congratulations’ but I had no idea which one had won it. The last thing I remember about the race was the Lilly was in front and then Sam seemed to catch her.
“Thankfully all four of ours seem to have come off fine, and as far as I know, there isn’t any problem with Mark’s dog either. It was just one of those things that you might expect when you get a final with only middle and wide runners.”
