The Mullins Family Romford Roll of Honour will have to be amended this morning: Romford Puppy Cups – 5 (David 3, John 1, Pat 1) Champion Stakes – 4 (John 2, David 1, Linda 1)

The Mullins brothers, David and John, pulled off the Cat One double on Friday night and this is how they did it:

Big brother John said: “I wasn’t at the track and watched the races on TV. I was really chuffed to see David’s pup win and then was delighted with Smallmead.

“I know most people thought she couldn’t catch Desperado Dan if he led. I disagreed and said to Lee (Calcutt), ‘if she lays second to any dog in the race, I expect her to win’. I could say that I was disappointed that she made hard work of it.

“But that wouldn’t be a criticism, it might explain just how highly I rate her. Lee is a fantastic owner and it is lovely to see him win a big race.

“I haven’t discussed it with Lee since the race, but the plan was always to go for the Derby and Smallmead is due to trial at Nottingham on Wednesday.

“I would like to make one more point about the racing. I thought the Romford commentary was outstanding. In my book, they have the best race commentator in the business (Steve Woodward), and the way he called them home really added to the atmosphere.”

The race to the bend, which was to prove decisive in the Coral Puppy Cup Final: L-R: Black Hill Boy (t6), Bramble Oliverj (t5), Lightfoot Ripley (t4), Our Lucky Lee (t2), Bubbly Bollinger (t3) and winner Tenpin (t1).
