Nottingham Tips for Monday night

Suffolk Downs and Nottingham kick off the open race action for the week. The feature races are two Jenningsbet Puppy Classic Trial Stakes at Colwick Park.

Last week’s impressive winner Droopys Suprstar goes head to head with the David Mullins-trained March On Freddie in the 7.27. Two greyhounds who are going to be at the top of the market when Ante Post prices become available. I am going to be with Droopys Suprstar to back up last week’s victory over Millbank Boiler.

He will edge in slightly from trap four but shouldn’t have any issues clearing the inside trio. So, if getting the first run on March On Freddie, he should go on to see that rival off.

Trap four Swift Underwater trained by John Lambe can take the second trial stakes at 7.44. The January 2023 puppy followed up an A4 success at his home track Perry Barr by taking a Puppy Open at the same venue. It was a very smart 28.43 calculated that was clocked on that occasion.

His first look at Nottingham last week flattered to deceive. The main reason is a sectional of 5.50 that doesn’t match the sectionals he was clocking at Perry Barr. The primary of those was the 3.53 when winning his puppy open so a better break is expected.

He will move towards the rail from trap four so it’s all about getting round the first two bends in a handy position for Swift Underwater. If doing so he can show what he’s made of between bends two and three where he should go on to win the race if doing things right.

Also on the card are two heats of a 500m standard competition. Sambar Kian drops back into a winnable race from trap one in the 8.19. In the following heat at 8.36, trap two Newinn Sharky can give supporters some compensation by landing the spoils.

The Sprint at 9.11 can go the way of Peter Harndens Salacres Buzz from trap one. The form behind recent Pall Mall winner Aero Sacundai and National Sprint winner Bombout Bullet does not get any better. He takes a drop in class here where a level break can see him pace up, hold his line and put the race to bed off the second bend.

Suffolk Downs Tip

Suffolk Downs hosts a number of Open races over various distances this afternoon. The best bet on the card goes in the Suffolk Stayers over 716m at 5.21pm where trap two Intrepidity for Jason Ray is looking to reverse the form with Homestead Anna from a week ago.

She gave herself too much to do last week running a huge race in defeat, beaten a length. A good run into the race earlier than last week should see her have too much for her rivals later on in the afternoon.

Sentinel makes a slick exit to claim the Juvenile Classic

Slick Sentinel was foot-perfect, claiming the Genco Juvenile Classic at Towcester on Sunday.

Just a length and a half separated the field as they hit the line the first time around. Patrick Janssens’ charge got into top gear to turn in front and when favourite Syd Zafiro was shuffled out wide, the race was all but over. The Irish challenger deserves plenty of credit, but he could do no more than give gallant chase from the second bend.

Elsewhere on the Towcester card, Barntick Bear set a new track record over 500m, stopping the clock at 28.52. That took six spots off the previous one, with Janssens enjoying a special Sunday.

Upcoming trials at Monmore

New Towcester 500m track record holder Barntick Bear is set for a return to six bends.

A winner over 712m at Towcester on Derby final, Patrick Janssens’ runner is due to trial over 630m at Monmore on Thursday in preparation for a possible crack at the Ladbrokes Summer Stayers Classic.

The Monmore competition starts on August 10 alongside the Ladbrokes Gold Cup with the semi-finals of both competitions on August 17 with the £10,000 finals due to take place as part of a gala card, with supporting finals and one-off open races, at the Wolverhampton venue on Saturday, August 24.

Meanwhile, Arc Silver Salver winner Magical Bluebear trials at Monmore on Tuesday, with Bill Russell’s dog having a spin over 264m.

National Greyhound Week 2024

The second National Greyhound Week will be held in the final week of August. Bank Holiday Monday (August 26) that week will see the Select Stakes and the Puppy Classic at Nottingham. Both events will be sponsored by Jenningsbet with a huge crowd expected at the venue. We will have more information on events as part of the week when we get it.
