Mark Wallis ‘only’ sent out three winners at Romford on Friday, though it was still a very successful night. A week after a seven-timer the Lakenheath handler sent a mere eight runners and took the forecasts in both the £500 finals.
Calco Flyer (Blonde Snapper-Blonde Fern, Sep 12), a joint leader of the open race table (with Clondoty Alex and Stonepark Mo), edged into the lead when taking his ninth victory on 2017 in the 400 metre decider. In his 120th outing, the 11-8f led home kennelmate Chubbys Oak by a length and a half in 23.99.
The 11-1 Calco and final double was landed when 4-1 chance Calco Swift (Godsend-Swift Silver, May 14) triumphed in a buckle with kennelmate Adageo Gold in 35.66 for the 575m.
Flyer’s sole lead at the top of the open race table lasted around an hour and a half before he was rejoined by Clondoty Alex (Razldazl Jayfkay-Castlehill Alex, May 13) with a 24.03 victory.
Earlier on the card Brookside Alice (Bornamassa Rocks-Blue Glenard, Oct 15) extended her recent streak of form with her fifth win in six races. Contesting the opening heat of the Greyhound Breeders Forum Puppy Oaks, the David Mullins trained 9-4 chance just held off Queen Anna by a short head in 24.34(+10).
The second semi went to Tea For Tess (Head Bound-Milliesupreme, Sep 15) who was given a strong endorsement by trainer Richard Devenish in Rob’s Romford Roundup on Friday. The 9-2 chance led home Droopys Shona by two and a half lengths in 24.25 (+10).
Sisters of the pair tackled the final qualifier and it was Shona’s sibling Clairkeith Ayana (Tullymurry Act-Droopys Blossom, Sep 15) who won the heat from Salacres Empire in a very respectable 24.16 (+10) with Ayana’s littermate Thameside Bound back in third.
