Creepy King (Cuil Cougar-Smoke Pixie, Jan 14) showed the benefit and excitement of staging top quality kennel sweepstakes when landing the 58th Yarmouth Championship.

The event, open to the best 36 runners at the track, had been dominated by John Mullins who had three in the decider including competition favourite Lann Jacob.

At traprise it was Irene Barnard’s 5-1 chance Creepy King (T5) who led them up with the favourite (T6) on his outside. They passed the winning line in identical splits (5.37) with Mullins’ third string, Badabing (T3), just a head away.

Despite there being three railers and three middle seeds, the first bend was virtually trouble free with only Outdoor Rumble (T2) checking out. The leader took the decisive shortest route and went clear, only for the race to unfold in the final strides as the Mullins pair made their challenge.

To great excitement King crossed the line with two short heads to spare over Badabing and Lann Jacob. The winner’s time was a career best, 27.91.
