Don’t judge the run by the time – not that it’s slow exactly!
Eden The Kid (Westmead Hawk-Cabra Jade, Aug 13) produced a fine display to overcome crowding and bumping to land the £500 First Choice Security Standard Trophy over 500m at Nottingham on Monday night.
Liz McNair’s black loves the big Colwick circuit as demonstrated by his second place in last year’s Select plus a victory in the British Breeders Stakes. Despite the empty trap on his inside last night, the big black in black found it difficult to get a run early on and was tellingly behind Making Paper (T5) at the first bend. But showing the type of track craft made famous by his sire, The Kid (4-7f) waited until a gap appeared in the backstraight and went through it.
Making Paper – who finished two places behind the Kid in the 2015 Derby Final ran on for third and is the fastest dog over course and distance this year (29.43) – ran on for second beaten two lengths. The winner recorded 29.73 and looks certain to be among the Betfred Select runners on Tuesday July 5.
The night’s next most notable performance was recorded by Charlie Lister’s Sidarian Padre (Vans Escalade-Drive Ahead, Aug 14) in the heats of a puppy 480. The 10-11f, who doesn’t get beat when he traps, led up from trap three and held off an impressive Droopys Missouri by two lengths in 28.49. (Fastest of year is Old Joe Golden’s 28.35). The other two qualifiers went to Tynwald Dinney (29.02) and Lowgate Malfoy (29.44).
Over the 305m Klockwork Kyla (Droopys Scoari-Klockwork Kyla, Mar 13) made it four wins and two seconds in his last six outings. Paul Sallis’ British bred went to traps at 7-2 and beat Tyrap Lee by just over a length in 17.63 (+10), just 13 spots outside Hiya Butt’s fastest of year.
Borna Mindy (Westmead Hawk-Borna Client, Jul 13) recorded the third fastest 680 of the year but had to pull out all the stops to beat Muskerry Dalo by half a length in 41.53. Diane Henry’s black was the second shortest priced winner of the year at 1-7f (The record is held by Roxholme Magic at 1-8f).
