In contrast to Thursday, there were plenty of shocks in Saturday’s session of first round heats in the Boylesports Irish Derby over 550 yards at Shelbourne Park.

Only five of the 12 favourites obliged with the biggest surprise being the defeat of Sporting Press Oaks winner Ballydoyle Honey.

Graham Holland’s bitch was slowly away and badly crowded on the run up. Meanwhile 8-1 kennelmate Calzaghe Clampet was well clear and went on to beat a recovering Honey by two lengths in 29.62sec.

It was the second leg of a double for Holland who 15 minutes earlier had earlier scored with Produce Stakes runner-up Amazing Dude. He made all to beat Allen Wizard by two lengths in 29.77sec.

Holland completed a treble with Riverside Pat in the last qualifier. The son of Kinloch Brae was soon clear and went on to slam Borna Sounds by five and a half lengths in a slick 29.49sec.

Secreto was the 5-4 favourite in the opening heat but he missed the break and got early trouble.

The race went to Brendan Matthews’ Leave At Dawn who led off the third turn to score in 29.75sec.

Leave At Dawn’s kennelmate Cable Bay was the favourite for heat 14, but Puppy Oaks finalist Urban Gossip made most of the running to beat Sidarian Teejay by two lengths in 29.60sec.

Cesarewitch winner Paradise Maverik was the favourite for heat 15 but was tapped for middle pace as the race went to 12-1 all the way winner Ballymac Ricky in 29.87sec.

Francie Murray’s Fair Taxes justified 4-6 favouritism in heat 16 when leading at the third turn to score in 29.87sec.

Morning Music and Clares Wonder were the 5-4 joint favourites in heat 19 but the race went to 8-1 shot Uncle Paul, who got up close home to deny Doubtful Venture by a short head in 29.93sec.

Pat Guilfoyle’s 7-4 jolly Laughil Duke impressed in heat 20 when pulling clear from the opening turn to slam Save The Don by four and a half lengths in 29.45sec, the fastest time of the round.

Paul Hennessy’s Mucho Macho Man was a trap to line winner of the next heat when holding Rockybay Yank by two and a half lengths in 29.77sec.

15 minutes later Hennessy completed a double with Barefoot Artist, who made all to score a length and a half victory over Cabra Miller in 29.65sec.

Gerry Merriman’s Highview Apollo came late in heat 23 to deny early leader Fordeflag by a length and a half in 29.72sec.
