Two greyhounds with greatly differing backgrounds were the stars of Henlow’s Sunday night card.
Quivers Bliss (Skywalker Puma-Quivers Point, May 14), flagged up by the Henlow racing office last week as a pup to follow in 2016 duly landed his first open. Tracy Stow’s black won the maiden by seven in 27.81 (+10), his fourth win in six races.
Bliss is from a decent Quivers litter that includes the same kennel’s Warrior plus Hall Green’s 28.73 runner, Quivers Manor. The trio were bred by Ann Watson from Cork.
However the fastest time of the night was A5 winner Allen Wizard with a 27.64 run and returning at 7-4f. The black, who had looked workmanlike when landing his only previous outing, an A6, in 28.25, is finally showing the sort of form that would be familiar to Shelbourne punters.
Last September, the Eric Cantillon trained 37kg monster, contested the final of the McKenna/Graham Irish Derby Plate having won a semi final in 29.65 for the Dublin 550 yards.
The night’s other open went to Bob Pendall’s Fairweather Pal who added 428m winning form to his two 277m successes.
There were four winning favourites and one joint favourite on the 12 race card and the stewards were kept busy. The fourth race on the card saw the first four home separated by just three spots (sh, sh, sh). Three races later the margins were nk, sh, sh.
