Droopys Oscar and Droopys Odell were the Irishman’s previous winners and Crossfield Cesar, like them, appears capable of going on to bigger things.
Droopys Buick was the 7-4 favourite after being the only dog to reach the final unbeaten and his backers must have been confident when he trapped out in front. However he just couldn’t clear the early paced Camp Joker on his inside.
Crossfield Cesar got a dream run around the outside to hit the front off the third turn and he went on to beat Camp Joker by almost two lengths in 29.87sec.
Cahill remarked: “Crossfield Cesar is a fast dog in the same mould of my previous two winners.
“We were looking at the Irish Puppy Derby for him but may stay local and go for the Kent Derby at Sittingbourne with him. The Eclipse back at Nottingham later in the year is also an option.”
Charlie Lister’s Bigmans Kid went quickest in the Stadium Bookmakers Maiden Dual Distance Trophy heats over 305 metres. He overcame trouble to beat Amelie Jennie by a length and a quarter in 18.06sec. Cabra Sky clocked 18.21sec in the second qualifier.
Little separated the winners on the clock in the Betfred Dual Distance Stayers Trophy over 680 metres.
Simon Cull’s Midway Jack made all in heat one to record 41.57sec, while Oneco Melissa recovered from trouble before posting 41.60sec.
Charlie Lister’s Ted Last impressed in trials before racing when posting a fastest of the session 29.67sec.
