First thing this morning the Executive Committee of the Irish Coursing Club officially announced that due to adverse weather conditions the final day of this year’s National Coursing Meeting had been postponed in the interests of hare and greyhound welfare. The meeting will be completed on Sunday next February 8th, with the first brace in slips at 11:30 sharp. With the cancellation of racing at Clonmel track last night due to frost, the writing was on the wall for coursing today. Heavy cloud cover this morning prevented the sun thawing out the running stretch. Five times Derby-winning trainer Brendan Matthews had already pulled his two runners out of the Kevin Smith Champion Stakes due to concerns about the going. Wise men are heading home before the roads freeze. The rest have gone to the pub for a few scoops.
