There was a 1-3-5 for trainers Seamus Cahill as Crossfield Giles landed the 450 metre Golden Crest decider at Poole.
The 9-2 chance (pictured) went into the decider on a seven-race losing sequence though the quality of victory would leave few questioning his right to the £4,000 first prize.
After trapping like a bullet to record a 4.17 sectional, the striped jacketed pup was pursued but never seriously challenged by his two kennelmates and it was left to Tony Collett’s Kentish Duke to follow him home, albeit with more than three lengths between them.
The 26.27 winner’s time was the fastest of the competition by nine spots, the third fastest time ever recorded over course and distance and just seven spots outside Daddy Knowsbest’s track record.
Trainer Seamus Cahill said: “He is a nice young dog and he is far from the finished article. He struggled a bit earlier in the competition but he is learning all the time and I think he will make up into a good greyhound.
“There is nothing in the calendar and we will try him over the 500 metres though I have my doubts that he will see it out. The real plan will probably for Sunderland, and then possibly the likes of Yarmouth and Henlow, anything around 460 metres though I would be hopeful he would get 480.”
On the subject of records, Only One Leemac (Ace Hi Rumble-Ballymac Eugene, Jan 15) shaved two spots off his own record with a 14.74 run for the 250m – and, courtesy of the presence of Jumereirah Maimumus – the Alma Keppie runner was returned at 10-3.
