On Thursday, GBGB welcomed specialist veterinary surgeons, students and researchers from around the country to Nottingham Stadium for its annual Vets’ Training Day.

The national event was established as a means of sharing best practice across the sport and highlighting the latest scientific research into greyhound welfare and safety. The day saw veterinary staff joined by representatives from GBGB’s Executive Team, Board of Directors and stipendiary stewards, as well as colleagues from the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB).

After introductions from GBGB Veterinary Director Dr Simon Gower, the day kicked off with an update from GBGB Managing Director Mark Bird on the progress the industry is making on its Greyhound Commitment. This included the recent launch of the Animal Care and Welfare apprenticeship scheme, helping upskill young people in the sport, as well as setting out a number of new initiatives currently in development.

During the day, talks were also given by leading veterinarians and researchers, including a presentation by Dr Nicola Rooney on the important research projects underway at the University of Bristol. Supported by the RSPCA, much of this work looks specifically at best practice in greyhound care and husbandry and draws on existing studies amongst other working dogs. Dr Richard Payne, a professor at Nottingham University, likewise joined the group to discuss developments in greyhound disease detection and monitoring.

Also outlined was GBGB’s new national Injury Recovery Scheme (IRS). This initiative will provide financial assistance towards veterinary treatment of career-ending orthopaedic (bone) injuries so that, wherever possible, greyhounds can go on to enjoy a full and active life in retirement.

Simon Gower, GBGB Veterinary Director, said:

“Events like our annual training day, which bring together experts from around the country, demonstrate the incredible knowledge and experience contained within our industry. As vets in particular, opportunities to address specialist research and innovations are invaluable in helping us develop and implement the very best practices in greyhound care.

“On behalf of GBGB, I would like to thank all the speakers who contributed to the day and continue to help drive forward progress in our sport.”
