Responding to the government’s confirmation that the lockdown restrictions will continue for the time being, GBGB Managing Director Mark Bird said:

“When we announced the temporary cessation of greyhound racing we did not set timescales on when we would restart, as we continue to take our lead from the government and their scientific advisors. In any return to racing, we must of course continue to prioritise the health and safety of those working within the sport and support the country’s efforts in the fight against COVID-19.

“Whilst government advice indicates that we can start back racing once appropriate measures are put in place, it is my firm belief that we would not have the social licence to race at a time when the country is still in full lockdown. We are seemingly closer to reaching the peak of the infection but we must show restraint and ensure that everything we are doing supports the government guidance.

“Let us be clear, however, that our ambition remains to return to racing behind closed doors as soon as it is safe to do so. This is in the best interests of everyone working within our sport, not least our greyhounds who, as working dogs and athletes, respond best to their regular routines. Our COVID-19 working group is in consultation with key stakeholders on a phased plan to return to racing, which will involve applying strict biosecurity and social distancing measures to protect all those involved in licensed greyhound racing.

“Our sport has been putting in an outstanding effort in light of the situation and it has been heartening to see the greyhound community rally together to support one another. We will be racing again soon but, in the meantime, we must all play our part to combat the virus and ensure those involved in our sport remain safe while continuing to provide the highest levels of care for our dogs.”
