A subgroup of the GBGB Board, track representatives and veterinary staff met again today to discuss the ongoing implications of COVID-19 on the successful operations of British greyhound racing.
After the meeting, Mark Bird, Managing Director of GBGB, said:
“We are continuing to monitor the situation closely and are in consultation with representatives from across our sport, as well as other sports bodies and industries who are facing similarly unprecedented times.
“At present, our stadia are continuing to race as normal. We are, however, cognisant of the government advice over the past 24 hours and the further announcements that will likely occur over the next few days, which make it increasingly likely that racing will at some stage begin to take place behind closed doors.
“The BHA’s decision today to minimise its calls on the NHS through postponing all racing is obviously not something that applies in the same way to greyhound racing. Our intention throughout therefore is to be able to continue racing in ways that minimise any potential transmission or additional impact on public services in line with our social responsibility.
“We announced yesterday some of the measures that we are putting in place in light of the current situation, and contingencies that will support those working within our sport should racing go behind closed doors, and we will be continuing to look together at how best we can continue to operate successfully and safely for the moment.”
