A subgroup of the GBGB board, track representatives and veterinary staff met today to discuss the implications of COVID-19 on the successful operations of British greyhound racing over the coming weeks.
After the meeting, Mark Bird, Managing Director of GBGB, said: “During these uncertain times we are continuing to follow the guidance and direction of government. We are in close discussion with key stakeholders regarding the ongoing continuance of UK greyhound racing.
“At present, there are no restrictions to the sport and we are confident that the safety and wellbeing of all those attending GBGB licensed tracks and events is being prioritised as stadia continue to follow the government’s advice. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and, in particular, we will be considering the implications of any restrictions on attendance at stadia or movement within the UK and from Ireland. We want to remain flexible so that we can quickly enact any direction from government without pre-empting decisions or taking action early that may, in due course, prove unnecessary.
“We know that this may be a time of worry for stadia, trainers, kennel staff, owners and bookmakers, all of whom will be concerned about the potential economic impact of the current circumstances. Likewise, our responsibility for the welfare of greyhounds remains our core priority.
“Should racing be required to take place behind closed doors, we are confident that it can do so. The economic implications of this, however, will need to be closely monitored and consideration needs to be given to how this will impact those whose livelihood depends on the status quo.
“At a time when televised sports in this country are facing limitations, we believe that greyhound racing continuing is vital both for our sport and for sports lovers across the country and would urge those with broadcasting rights for the sport to be considering the opportunities to show greyhound racing to wider audiences at this time.”
