Sutton United are 14-1 to beat Arsenal in their FA Cup tie – a full six points shorter than Freshfromthesesh was trading at when he went to traps for a Hove sprint open on Thursday.
The 19 month old pup, running in only the second race of his career, and drawn against the country’s top sprinter handled by an eight-time champion trainer – and he only went and did the business from T6 . .
The 20-1 chance was only the fourth runner for 19 year old Alfie Herbert on behalf of the Feeling Fwesh Syndicate named after their prejolly routine before they go racing.
Alfie said: “There are five of us in the syndicate including my dad Neil who is really more into coursing. We bought Freshfromthesesh and his litter brother Farfomfwesh after they had trialled at Thurles as pups. We originally trialled at Henlow and hoped that they might make good graders. But they trialled quite well and we decided to enter the pair of them in opens. Freshfromthesesh didn’t trap well but won the sprint and I said to my brother, ‘he runs a bit like Ela Ela Genie’ but I certainly didn’t expect we would be running against him in his next race.”
In fact, Mark Wallis’ runner (T3 4-7f) failed to make next week’s decider and Freshfromthesesh’s novice handler is keeping his fingers crossed for a third consecutive victory.
He said: “He is drawn five and there is virtually nothing between the two semi final winners, so you never know”
