Irish Derby 2nd round starts tonight

Eight heats on the card this evening and there are some classy types in action.

March On Freddie will be the highlight for most fans in the UK this evening. He has the striped jacket on his back in heat three at 8.32. Sent off the 3/10 favourite last week for David Mullins, he looks like being shorter this time around. It seems unlikely that he will need to go close to repeating his 29.19 to make it 2/2 at Shelbourne.

The best clash of the night comes in heat seven at 9.39. Freddie’s litter brother is in action, drawn outside Carrick Aldo. There was nothing between them to the third bend last week and Barry Caul thinks that the draw inside can work in Aldo’s favour. For his thoughts on all 16 of the heats tonight and tomorrow, you can listen here.

Seven Beach against Tarsna Maasai is another outstanding clash in heat six. It is an evening where the wide runners look to be favoured once more which will become more interesting as the competition goes on.

Joe’s Romford tips

***9.46 Romford – Roxys Bullet (5/1)
**9.11 Romford – Breaghmore Paudy (11/10)
*7.59 Sunderland – Sunnyside Termo

Romford, Nottingham and Sunderland are the places to be for open race action this evening with two Classic Trial stakes taking place at Sunderland, plenty of open races at Romford and Barntick Bear the headline act at Nottingham with a tilt at the Premier Greyhound Racing Eclipse next on the agenda.

Friday’s Nap

The nap of the evening runs in the final race at Romford, the PGR On Sky Sports Racing Stayers over 575m at 9.46pm where I am hoping Roxys Bullet can overcome a draw in trap four to lead and win. He ran well behind Fabulous Sonique last week when leading to the third bend but allowed the winner to get inside at that point but stayed on well to finish second so a smart exit from trap four can see him clear Golden Palace and Pepinthestep to lead and if still in front heading down the far side, Roxys Bullet can go onto win at a big price.

Tonight’s Next Best

The next best is Breaghmore Paudy in the Friday Night 500 Maiden Final over 400m at Romford at 9.11pm. He looks to have found his ideal trip after winning convincingly in the heats last week by four lengths clocking 24.02 and although that was from trap one, he should not have any concerns doing the same again from trap two where he can clear his main rival Piemans Angel who was impressive in a different way last week after a missing the break he powered through the field to win well in 24.14. If Breaghmore Paudy gets first run and leads, I would fancy him to hold on from Piemans Angel.

Other selections across the cards are Druids All Go in the Friday Night 500 Maiden Stayers Final at Romford over 575m at 8.54pm. Sunnyside Termo in the Classic Trial Stakes Division one at 7.59pm and at Nottingham the best bet on the card looks to be Droopys Flotilla in the Arc Stayers Trophy over 680m at 7.56pm where she can get first run on Vale Bluebell to lead and make all.

Honours spread almost evenly at Hove

Newinn Benni kicks the night off with a sub 29-second run.

Derek Knight’s Sussex Cup winner was in fine form, producing the sixth quickest time of 2024 over 500m, a 28.94. Odds on favourites won both heats of a 740m competition with Tuono Bella striking for Paul Donovan in 44.56 and June Harvey’s Ower Smasher in 44.75.

The only trainer to get two winners on the board was Rosie Tungatt. Savana Ferguson would spring a 33/1 surprise in a sprint contest before Uncle Juan turned over an odds on favourite in the 695m contest.

Uncle Freddie got the better of Candolim Monsoon in a cracking 500m contest in 29.25. Jason Heath’s Burrows Eclipse and Lacken Holly for Claude Gardiner were the other winners over that trip. Another sprint contest went to Swift Pablo for Nick Deas while 515m contests were won by Urlee Star for David Elcock, Kelvins Hat for Seamus Cahill and Rapido Ali for Patrick Browne. The last named produced a particularly smart 29.88.

Newcastle domination from Fenwick

Three opens on the card last night and Jimmy Fenwick swept the lot!

Coppice Saphire and Tyne Tees Richie would take out the 480m contests on the card in 28.47 and 28.65 respectively. It was Ballymac Lineout who got the job done over six bends, beating his kennelmate Ballymac Camilla in 38.90. That is the second quickest of the year so far over 640m, Lineout himself setting the fastest back in June with a 38.84.

Suprstar leads the way at Swindon

Michael Burton’s dog is quickest of the three Thursday night opens.

28.16 was Droopys Suprstar’s time as he saw off a rock-solid yardstick in Coppice Warrior. Burton doubled up on the evening with Droopys Priority. A 28.31 was enough to run out a fluent winner. Kevin Hutton saw his Southfield Poppy make it four wins from five visits to the track with a 28.38 victory.
