Mark Wallis passed the 70 open winner landmark for the year at Romford with a double on Friday night, though the track’s leading open race performer drew a blank.
The Wallis double came courtesy of sprinter Tread Lightly (Head Bound-Hometown Honey, Jul 14) and star stayer Aayamza Breeze (Aero Majestic-Kiltrea Ally, Feb 15) but Calco Flyer was unable to add to his nine victories to date when beaten by Azza Boy in a 400 open.
The meeting also featured a four-timer from Paul Young. The Wickford handler, who sent out 16 runners on the night : Tookmaker Rambo (11-10f), Young Minella (5-4f), Glamorous Sharif (1-1f) and Thatchers Romeo (8-1).
(The meeting also produced an interesting insight into breeding. British bred youngster Westmead Jess (Coolavanny Bert-Westmead Sula, Jul 15) ran her first qualifying trial at Henlow almost six months ago. She led all the way and clocked a very moderate 28.93 for the 460m. She qualified into bottom grade, A10, and was beaten in her first three races.
The black pup finally got her head in front in her fourth outing winning an A10 in a career best, 28.45 (+20). It took her two races to win an A9, four to win an A8 (28.29) followed by an A7 in 27.90. On Friday, in her 17th race and second visit to Romford, Jess landed a maiden open in 24.37.
