It is a long hail from Sheffield to Newcastle but it must have seemed like a breeze for Jimmy Wright on Tuesday night as he made the journey back having enjoyed his most successful raid ever on the Owlerton prizemoney. The Northumberland-based Scotsman took a quartet of runners to South Yorkshire and they all obliged to produce a 26-1 four-timer.
Droopys Vodka (4-6) got the party off to a flying start when the well regarded September 2013 youngster took the opening contest, which was followed by another excellent victory for the sprinter Walshes Hill at the same prohibitive odds. Magical Reid (4-5) produced the third leg in the Maiden Stayers’ contest and the “Yankee” was completed with a 9-2 win for Airmount Paco in the Super Stayers.
Wright has no great plans at the moment for any of his dogs and has ruled out a Derby raid, saying: “Maum Legend was my main Derby dog but he is injured and I am not going all the way down to Wimbledon just for the sake of it. I will keep the dogs to one-off opens for the moment, but I will be looking at the competitions coming up at Monmore.”
One event very much in Wright’s calculations is the BresMed Northern Sprint at Sheffield in July. Walshes Hill’s success at the track on Tuesday was his eighth from ten starts over the course and distance and he must be a major contender for the Category Two prize.
