Daytime Flyer remained on course to add the BresMed Northern Sprint to the Festival Flyer he landed at Sunderland a couple of weeks ago after taking his semi-final at Sheffield on Tuesday to stretch his winning sequence to five.
The Peter Wood-trained dog led from bend one and kept going strongly, but he did come under pressure in the later stages of the race as Ridgemount Gump, who had hit traffic problems early on, mounted a late charge that just failed by half a length, the winner clocking 16.16 for the 280 metres.
There was trouble at the initial corner in the first semi-final, but Tin Soldier extricated himself from the problems to go on and take the verdict by threequarters of a length from Sneezys Balboa in 16.40.
Harry Crapper was in a strong position after the heats of the BresMed Stayers with his Worsboro Phantom taking the initial qualifier from Glenpadden Ace by a short head in 39.38 for the 660 metres and kennelmate Dinzeo defeating Droopys Cortez by a length and a half in 39.60 in heat two.
But Barrie Draper, trainer of Glenpadden Ace and Droopys Cortez, got a win on the board in the last qualifier where his Crazy Weasley got the better of Head Iton Scoogs by a neck in 39.65.
As expected Jimmy Wright’s Droopys Buick is the dominant force in the BresMed Puppy, the son of Yeah Man clocking 27.83 for the 480 metres on a slow track as he cruised to a six-length victory in heat two.
Elaine Parker’s Lightfoot Powell managed to hold on by a short head from the subsequently disqualified Geelo Yo Yo, posting 28.49 in heat two, while Calzaghe Teddy, a kennelmate of Daytime Flyer, rounded off a good night for Pelaw trainer Wood by accounting for Droopys Vodka by a length and a half in 28.68.
