2015 Henlow Derby winner Making Paper has almost certainly been retired after finishing lame in the heats of the Novice Gold Cup at the the same track on Sunday night.
Owner John Lynk said: “It is to be confirmed but it doesn’t look good, he has damaged a gracilis. We knew it was serious straight away. He went second and from that point nothing would get past him and he finished last.”
In a UK career of just under two years, he has raced on just 47 occasions. The son of Hondo Black and Quarterland Hope finished fifth in the 2015 English Derby before going on to land the RPGTV sponsored event at Henlow. He ran third in the 2016 Select Stakes and Monmore Gold Cup.
Successful in open class from 280-550m, his most notable times include: 15.91-280m Sheffield, 27.16-460m Henlow, 27.51-480m Sheffield, 27.94-480m Monmore, 28.28-480m Wimbledon, 28.56-500m Sheffield and 29.43-500m Nottingham.
