A couple of surprises but few shocks was the story of the night in the first round of the RPGTV 73rd East Anglian Derby.

The top three in the ante post lists, Roxholme Nidge (6-1), Seaglass Phantom (10-1) and Roxholme Glory (12-1), all won their heats.

Fourth in, Seaglass Tiger (14-1) looked a fraction fortunate to survive a blurred photo finish and be given as a dead heat when he possibly looked beaten by half a width of nose leather. Fifth in Roxholme Jim ran a decent enough second behind Phantom.

On going rated between -10 and -20, there was little between the eight winners on the clock. The night’s surprise package was the impressive, strong finishing Perrys Choice (66-1 ante post), with Wildfire Jimmy another in the punter’s blind spot.

The 25-1 winner on Derby Final night at Nottingham, and rated a 66-1 ante post, landed the sixth heat on merit. But why the surprise about a dog who has 28.21 winning from at Tralee, under his old name of Chespirito?
