Rab McNair confirmed that the racing career of Fromposttopillar was over after the quadruple Cat One winner broke a hock in the fifth heat.

Rab said: “He has broken the bone at the top of the hock where it connects with the Achiles Tendon. It is the same injury that finished Eden The Kid’s career. He is now retired.

“It is a shame but we are philosophical about it. I spoke to Brendan (Keogh) after the race and told him. His view was that we had had a great run with the dog. These injuries can happen at the start of careers. He more than paid for himself and gave us a lot of fun along the way.

“Brendan said just before the race he had commented on what great condition the track was in, and I agree. These injuries are part of racing, Eden The Kid broke his hock in a solo trial.

“Postie is strapped up and not a bit bothered. He ate up his food to the last crumb. We will get him off to the vet John Thompson tomorrow and get him fixed up.

“When he is better, we’ll take him to get some semen drawn. I thought the world of the dog and will be putting Queen Beyonce, Queen Jessiej and Havana Allablaze to him.”

During a UK career of just 25 races, ‘Postie’ won on 14 occasions including the Kent Plate, the Summer Stayers, the RPGTV Puppy Collar and the Olympic. He was also a beaten favourite in the Sussex Cup.

Rab said: “His future would have been over six bends but there wasn’t anything around at the moment. The plan was for the 650m race at Oxford.

“As he got older he didn’t have the early pace to compete with the best middle distance dogs but that has always happened with dogs when they turn three. I think he was an exceptional greyhound with exceptional pace, by Droopys Sydney out of a Tullymurry Act bitch. Both lines have worked well for me. If anyone else is interested in using him, they can get in touch.”

Fromposttopillar’s injury came less than 24 hours after the kennel’s ante post Oaks favourite, Queen Joni, sprained a hock at Perry Barr.

Rab said: “I feared the worst when she didn’t show her usual pace along the backstraight. She has some discomfort on it, there may be some tendon issues but thankfully it doesn’t look too serious.

“We would have given her a break after the competition anyway so you just have to take these things in your stride. With any luck she will come into season but she certainly won’t be back before January.”
