Jaytee Jet – fastest of the year – 28.01

Eden The Kid, Ballymac Matt and Domino Storm exit

Wide runners dominate the evening

The Greyhound Derby shifts up a gear at the ’48 stage’ and this year’s third round brought its share of carnage.

The star of the night was Jaytee Jet with the fastest time of the year, 28.01, just three quarters of a length outside the track record.

Jet is a wide runner, and most of the casualties came from the four inside boxes. Seven of the eight striped jackets and six wearing orange made it through to the quarters finals.

Typical of the suffering was Domino Storm who trapped on terms but made no progress on the inside of the course as Jaytee Jet shot along the outer. Once in front, there was no stopping Paul Hennessy’s big striding hound who rocketed to an easy victory.

At that stage Jet shared Derby favouritism with Eden The Kid who trapped well (ht 7) and looked well placed going to the turn. Perhaps significantly, the lightweight You Never Listen who should have led after trapping well, was, like sister Domino Storm, struggling to make her early pace pay. She was eventually clobbered as yet another littermate, Be Up Front, shot down the outside and was never headed. In all the melee, there was an astonishing run from Droopys Roddick who was also involved in the wars but came from behind the Kid to qualify.

Hiya Butt, was the most impressive of the railers with another flawless performance, and must be considered a major player with so many middles and wides making it through.
